The Crew That Checks the Wall Before the Can

Edhamiltonworks paints houses in Santa Monica. We work out of 26th Street in the 90401 ZIP, and most of what we do is exterior repainting on stucco and wood within a few miles of the ocean.

We describe ourselves by the timing rather than by the finish because on this side of the county the timing is the skill. Two crews can buy the same coating, prep the same wall to the same standard, and end up with two different results twelve months later. The difference is usually which morning each of them started rolling.

Why We Talk About the Weather So Much

Coastal air holds water. A marine layer sits over the west side of town most mornings from late spring into the summer, the sun does not reach a shaded elevation until late morning, and a stucco wall stays cold long after the air feels warm. Put a coat on that wall while it is at or below the dew point and you have applied paint over a film of condensation. It looks perfect at the end of the day and it fails quietly over the following season.

So we carry an infrared thermometer and a hygrometer, and we read the wall we are about to paint rather than the forecast for the neighborhood. It takes a minute. It has saved us from starting on more mornings than we can count.

What That Means for Your Job

It means we quote a window instead of a hard finish date, and we tell you which parts of the work can happen in the fog and which cannot. Washing, masking, crack repair, caulking and interior work all carry on. Finish coats wait until the surface is warm, dry and rising.

It also means we stop earlier in the afternoon than some crews do, because a film needs hours of dry air before the evening damp comes back in. The wall we do not paint at four thirty is the wall that still matches the others next year.

The Houses Around Here

Spanish Colonial Revival stucco with hairline map cracking. Ocean Park and Sunset Park bungalows with wood trim that takes the salt air first. A large stock of apartment buildings and condos from the 1920s through the 1970s on narrow lots, where staging and permit parking take as much planning as the painting. Plenty of it predates the 1978 lead paint rules, so we test before we open a surface up and work wet and contained where the test comes back positive.

What We Will Tell You Not to Buy

A thick elastomeric coating on a wall that has a water source behind it. A one coat quote over a color change. A full exterior repaint in the middle of a foggy stretch when waiting a few weeks would give us proper working days. And any elevation that is genuinely sound and does not need our attention yet, which we would rather point out on the walkthrough than discover for you afterwards.
